We want Safe Places for people with a learning disability in Greenwich Borough so that they feel safe when out and about in the community!!!

by Advocacy in Greenwich in London, England, United Kingdom

We are a group of people with a learning disability who live in Greenwich Borough.

People with a learning disability can feel unsafe, scared and nervous when out and about.

All kinds of things can happen:

- You can get lost

- You can feel unwell

- Lose your bus pass

- Get picked on

- Strangers might try and talk to you

- School kids might laugh at you

If you are on your own it is hard to know what to do.

This is what we want to do about it:

We have trained people in places like local libraries, community centres, supermarkets, cafes and hotels to be 'Safe Places'.

Once the workers are trained they display a Safe Places window sticker so that people with a learning disability know it is a Safe Place to go if they need help.

People with a learning disability sign up and get a card to show the Safe Place if they need help. The card has their emergency contact information.

We need funding to carry on. We want to sign up 100 Safe Places in Greenwich Borough.

We need funding to promote the scheme to people with a learning disability so that they have a Safe Places card and know how to use it.

This is a link to a 3 minute film on You Tube that we made to explain to people with a learning disability how Safe Places works:  https://youtu.be/MOmtIubT0uU
